FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
How is my child identified for multi-lingual support? When you enroll your child at Manchester Community Schools, you will be asked to complete a Home Language Survey. If a language other than English is spoken at home, we will administer a brief, welcoming screening assessment (called the WIDA screener). This helps us understand your child's current English proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing so we can create the best personalized support plan for their success.
Will my child miss regular classroom time? Our priority is to keep students in their core classrooms alongside their peers as much as possible. Much of our multi-lingual support is provided directly within the regular classroom (known as collaborative or push-in support). If specialized, small-group instruction is needed to focus on specific language skills, it is carefully scheduled to ensure your child does not miss essential academic lessons.
Does this program replace learning in our native language? Not at all! We view your home language as a tremendous asset, and being bilingual is a superpower. Our program focuses on adding English to your child's skill set, not replacing their native language. We highly encourage families to continue speaking, reading, and writing in their home language, as a strong foundation in a native language actually makes learning English much easier.
